Outside of research, I also like doing photography. I typically take photos using an iPhone (specifically an iPhone 5s in 2020, and an iPhone XR from 2021 to 2026); I perform only minimal editing after each capture. This is sort of like the digital equivalent of "f/8 and be there".

I also enjoy gardening. During the pandemic, I built and maintained a vegetable garden at my family's house on Vancouver Island, which contained cucumbers and bush beans. You can see this garden in various stages of construction here, here, and here, and its eventual output here and here.
When my parents were looking for a new apartment in Vancouver, I created a map of neighbourhoods in the Vancouver area showing them which ones are similar to other neighbourhoods that they like. This map was made by doing PCA on census tract data from Statistics Canada (containing about 2000 features); the first three principal components were encoded as RGB values for each census tract.
